I always maintain an open, honest line of communication with my athletes and prospective athletes. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about coaching or running whatsoever. Why you might consider hiring a running coach:

  • You don’t have to think about your training plan

  • Feel supported

  • It’s an investment - like going to the gym

  • Injury prevention

  • Provide an outsider's perspective from a zoomed out lens

  • Well rounded training plan from a holistic health approach

  • Specific plan tailored to you and can adapt it based on life, injury, sickness, etc.

  • Help with race planning and strategy, race logistics, race nutrition, etc.

  • Get to look forward to your training by looking ahead at your training log

What to look for when hiring a run coach?

  • People who inspire you - maybe they’ve done similar races or events that interest you; therefore they have experience with what some of your goals may be

  • Trust

  • Open/easy to talk to

  • Good listener

  • Accommodating

  • Effective communicator

  • Positive vs. more intense (which do you prefer)

  • Is it important to you what their running background is?

  • Are they coaching full time or as a side gig? Not saying one or the other is better, but there are pros and cons.

  • Interview a few coaches before making a decision! Lots of coaches (myself included) offer a free “meet and greet” video call. It’s a good way to get to know their demeanor, ask questions about them and their program, and see if it’ll be a good fit. 

  • Tell them what you want. Be open and honest (that goes both ways!). You can’t expect them to read your mind, so tell them how you like to be coached (hard-ass vs. positive encouragement, etc.). Tell them why you’re seeking out a coach and how you see them fitting into your training program. Remember, you are paying for their service, so you should be 100% satisfied!

When should you look for a running coach?

  • Perhaps you feel like your running has plateaued

  • You have a busy life and want help structuring your training around your commitments

  • You’re looking to improve running form and economy

  • You’d like to be part of a community; a team

  • You want to increase mileage and intensity training but also want to stay injury free
